Funny, I always assumed the opposite -- that they had adopted them from somewhere!

it has been widely publicised that one of the influences for the Hang was Gamelan - and some of the early pang instruments looked very much like members of the gamelan instruments http://www.hangfan.co.uk/clip_image002.jpg you see? no speculation here - just fact.

so why frank do you tirelessly defend PANrt? it is not necessary...

Frank

this is the defensive (to me) comment that i was referring to.... you say this phrase so often and that is what i meant by tireless.

this is why 'tone' is difficult to understand in text and german seems to OFTEN have a VERY different 'tone' to English... this is why you are so often criticised; plus the 'timing' of your posts here are ALMOST ALWAYS when there is an issue regarding PANArt..... you understand?

warmest wishes

Frank S wrote:But it is easy. To answer the question with a fact!. I asked Felix today what the background behind the names is. And it is simple.
I have NO doubt, that he told me the truth. It is not bad, if the origin is Gamelan and chinese Drum and he has told me this answer if this was
the background.

Felix told me, that in the year 2000 they gave GU and DING a name.
Ding because it sounds like "Ding" and GU because it sounds in the ears from Felix and Sabina like "Gu" if you activate the helmholtz. That is all!
Simple.

Frank, thank you for asking Felix and bringing a definitive answer to the forum. That's the best way to eliminate speculation about Panart.

Indeed, I happily stand corrected - thanks Frank.
Still, I find this coincidence astonishing, both on "ding" and "gu".
So we have three good stories now, and one might even be true! :D

Frank, I don't think it is necessary for me (or anyone else) to preface every post here with "this is my opinion:". Since I am not God, everything I say here is merely my opinion. God help you if you take everything you read in an online forum for The Truth...

Indeed, I for once agree Frank. I think we all should let each other speak freely here, and exercise tolerance.

Again, thanks for making the subject of this thread true! :D

Correct, in the year 2000 he borrowed the names that were already out there from 800ad... Can't change history... nice try tho

I think the theory, this may be. The people who invented the Gamelan and Chinese drum heard the same sounds that Felix, so the coincidence of the same words.
Never give up your dreams!
With work and dedication all is possible!

Learning to play these beautiful instruments...

Creating a handpan with new design...

I like that thought! Germans think of a door bell as going 'ding-dong', Balinese think of their gamelan scales as 'ding-dong-deng-dung-dang', English speakers might call such sounds 'gong' while a 'ding' is a dent (damage) in an otherwise smooth surface... but if that surface is a sheet of metal, it may well sound like a German or Balinese 'ding'... coincidence? Universality? A bit of both?

Idle speculation, for sure, but fun!
